The Challenge
Global Corporate Website
Johnson & Johnson is a long-standing global brand with numerous product
offerings across multiple healthcare, medical devices and pharmaceutical
industries. Although the company has long embodied a message of caring and warmth for families and children, research showed visitors to JNJ.com were leaving feeling less positively about the brand than before they entered the site. Johnson & Johnson realized this was a significant obstacle and approached Atmosphere to redesign their global flagship site — an extraordinary opportunity that was layered with equally extraordinary challenges. Since our assignment was the first redesign of their online presence for almost 10 years, the experience would have to be rethought from the ground up. It had to give exposure to the varied voices of the companies and organizations that make up J&J globally. It had to offer easy, intuitive access to information on operating companies, products and news. And most importantly it needed to bring the brand promise and proposition to life for every visitor. -

The Solution

The creative vision was simple and elegant: video rich content would be immediately available but not forced upon a visitor, while large images that showed the human side of the company would quite literally give the company a face. Our role initially was to design the site's layout and develop the Flash components, but the responsibilities quickly grew beyond that. In order to successfully implement everything from the concept to the design to the development of the site, we had to balance the creative requirements (large format content, rich Flash and video experience) with the functional, technical and business requirements (no load time, client managed content, possible future globalization). We also had to ensure communication was effective among the client (a diverse team from within J&J's corporate culture,) Global Services (the client’s IT organization,) the contracted implementation team at TCS contracted by Global Services, as well as our own internal creative, development and account teams.

The Results

Our most important measure for the redesign was to bring the J&J corporate credo to life for every visitor. According to research, the web experience met our goal: upon encountering the new J&J.com, favorability of Johnson & Johnson as a company increased by 23%. With an understanding of the critical role usability plays in overall favorability, reports also showed that ease of navigation increased by 50%. In 2009, the site received an IAC award for Outstanding Website.
